As the 20th anniversary week of the release of Nirvana’s seminal album Nevermind comes to a close, here’s a tribute album which covers all 13 tracks off the album (The 13th song is “Endless Nameless” which is a hidden track on some copies of the CD). This is a great tribute lineup that even includes two artists which Kurt Cobain and Nirvana covered themselves on the legendary MTV Unplugged session. The first is the Meat Puppets (Nirvana covered “Lake of Fire”) who play the epic “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Lead singer, Curt Kirkwood said that “it was a cool, weird opportunity” to cover Nirvana. The Vaselines, who wrote “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam,” cover Nirvana’s classic, “Lithium.” The Vaselines have been rejecting Nirvana cover requests ever since Nirvana performed on MTV Unplugged before this situation presented itself.
The rest of the lineup includes Butch Walker & The Black Widows doing a rendition of “In Bloom,” the Midnight Juggernauts taking on “Come As You Are,” Titus Andonicus tackling “Breed,” Amanda Palmer doing a rendition of “Polly,” Surfer Blood covering “Territorial Pissings,” Foxy Shazam playing “Drain You,” Jessica Lea Mayfield (who confesses that she “found out about Nirvana through the Foo Fighters”) performs “Lounge Act,” Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band take on “Stay Away,” Telekinesis perform “On a Plain,” Jeff the Brotherhood play “Something in the Way,” and to complete the album Ema takes on “Endless Nameless.” Enjoy!
