Happy Birthday Buddy Holly

In honor of Buddy Holly’s 75th birthday, Fantasy Records recently released an excellent tribute album, Rave On Buddy Holly.  It includes 19 covers including a wide variety of artists such as The Black Keys, Florence + The Machine, Julian Casablancas, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket, Patti Smith, and Lou Reed.  Paul McCartney sounds as though he has regained his youth screaming like a teenager on “It’s So Easy.”  The top 3 tracks are The Detroit Cobras’ “Heartbeat,” Jenny O’s “I’m Gonna Love You To,” and Cee Lo Green’s cover of “(You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care.”  The artists (for the most part) do a great job of not just going through the motions but really making Holly’s songs their own and giving them a real modern feel while still staying true to Buddy Holly’s original versions.  His songs are as good today as they were back then.  Click here to download.
